1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I bought a chicken coop in 2015 but didn’t finally get chickens until 2020. My neighbor was moving and needed to rehome her flock, so it seemed like the perfect time to get some. I ended up taking 5.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Only one of my chickens, Trudy, is still with me. The others sadly became prey to wildlife.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I don’t know Trudy’s breed. She’s a red head but not a dark red.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I’ve loved getting to know chickens! Trudy has so much personality and attitude. I love telling people about her and about the quality of life of a free-range chicken versus factory-raised.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I set up a Ring camera under my house when my cat went missing last year. I never found him, but I’ve still enjoyed watching wildlife come and go, like my own nature channel. I’ve become familiar with the raccoons and opossums who regularly visit.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have dogs, cats, a chicken, a duckling, and no human children. I don’t eat meat and originally got chickens for free-range eggs, but they quickly became pets.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I came across this site while searching Google for help with my duckling over the past several weeks. I decided to join the community so I could ask more direct questions related to Harvey’s condition. My neighbor found two young ducklings struggling to keep up with their flock. They both had wry neck and one also had a slipped tendon. Wildlife rehabbers wouldn’t take them because they’re Muscovy ducklings. I had hoped with vitamin injections, the ducklings would start to thrive and could maybe be returned to their flock once strong enough. The littlest one passed away after two weeks and broke my heart. I’ve now had Harvey 6 weeks, so I think he’s around 7 weeks old. He got four weekly vitamin injections, did a round of antibiotics, was dewormed, and was placed on an anti-inflammatory to help with the swelling around his slipped tendon. The vet was not able to slide the tendon back into place, so his foot has curled and he can’t walk well. I think his neck has improved but it isn’t straight and so far he can’t groom his left side. He still seems like a happy little guy (or girl, not sure) and has had fun with swim lessons these past few days. I’d like to know from more experienced duck parents, is there any chance his neck will straighten out at this point? Any suggestions for his slipped tendon? I’m open to a prosthetic once he’s fully grown. Thanks!!
