Hi there
Our first go with chickens started about 11 years ago. We got 15 chicks from a local Farm Supply. We raised them in a brooder on the floor of our office in the house. During their early weeks, we built an outdoor coup with designs my husband found through BYC. We enjoyed what we called “chicken TV”. Those birds are interesting and more intelligent than we initially gave them credit for!
The coup was still standing when we sold that house last year. Through the years, we processed a few of the hens, lost a few along the way for various reasons, and adopted some from a neighbor and others from a friend.
We gave our flock away when we sold the house. Three were adopted by some friends who have their own flock (and a rooster...our girls had a steep learning curve since we didn’t have a rooster before.) The other nine went a little further north to some other friends who live on a ranch.
Currently, no chickens but revving up quick at our new 4.75 acre homestead. We learned a lot with our first flock and have some friends who share their homesteading adventures with us and we’re excited to finally have more open area to do more of that ourselves.
So far this year, my husband of almost 17 years, our 9-year-old daughter and I have 6 raised beds for gardening and an orchard of assorted fruit trees, primarily apple. We plan to get more chicks soon, and new for all of us... ducklings! Not 100% of breeds just yet, but for ducks we’re leaning toward Peking and Appleyard. Any suggestions? We want them mainly for meat and eggs, but plan to also have a drake for breeding and protection.
We have one elderly dog at home. Hubby and I work full time (he’s in tech, I’m a nurse). Our daughter is in 3rd grade and she keeps us on our toes. We enjoy working outside and reaping the benefits of our labor.
My husband and several friends have found BYC to be a trusted resource... I honestly thought I registered ages ago, but I guess I got distracted
Happy to be here and to learn and share!
