We are soon to have some baby chicks so looking for ideas on raising them. We have raised them before but predators killed them all twice. Killed them all in one fell swoop each time. Last time it happened we just could not handle it happening again.
Some years have passed and we are going to give it a new try.
Wish us luck!!

How did you lose so many so quickly? What fencing/precautions are you taking to prevent it from happening again?

from California! Make sure you're using hardware cloth (super strong wire) and triple check your coop/run for any way for the predators to get in!

We will be rebuilding our coop. It was based on an old trailer. Before we had small holed chicken wire completely surrounding and topping the coop. We did not think anything could get through that but boy were we surprised. The first bunch we lost from the run which was made from the same chicken wire. It also was covered with the wire.
After reading on here about the hardware cloth we are going that way this time on the coop. The run will probably be chicken wire but when we are not able to see the chickens they are going to be put in the coop. At least that is the plan at the moment. Might tweak it a bit since the chicks wont be here til the middle of May. We have plenty of time to research and think this out.
