Large, heavy breeds tend to do better in cooler climates. The birds that will do well in the desert are the mediterranean breeds, like leghorn, ancona, minorca, and other lightweight birds. they tend to be flighty but don't eat a whole lot and leghorns of course are laying machines. Easter eggers might do alright since they can be smaller in stature as well.

I live in the mountains on Az, and I have 2 Rir, 2 EE, 1 buff o, and 1 cochin they do well in our 4 seasons.

I agree, the large heavy breeds tend to be bred for cold climates, and have a lot of down (especially Russian breeds like Orloffs). They may survive, but will probably be miserable.

Stick with the mediterranean and spanish breeds like leghorns, minorcas, and white faced spanish, and your egg production won't suffer when the heat hits. And there is always the Game breeds, who thrive anywhere and everywhere!

These are my new babies two white, two black with white speckels, and my fav. the tan EEs. I also have a red and an EE, I need 4 more.

Thank you all for the help. I have had a love for these odd beauties for a while and have noticed that the silkies do best in my area. I use the fethers for jewlry and eat the eggs. Rose and Tweety are over a year. They lay every day. My barn is under my house and it is big enough for me to have three doz. but all I want is one doz.
Last year I lost all but 4 chickens and 3 ducks out of 2 doz chickens and 6 ducks when a dog got in my yard. She got in my yard again and I had the two left. The dog catcher took the dog. Now I am working to get my flock up. Rose hates dogs so bad that she tries to kill them threw the fence. Tweetie lost a wing as a pullet from a cat. She is the sweetest thingThey belong to my 6 year old and are babied.
We picked up 6 baby birds a month ago and 5 ducks yesterday. 2 males and 3 females. I am looking to bread them for more ducks. I can't find anyone that sells silkies. I want 4 of them. I live in a small town in AZ. I want 2 doven birds all togather. I love silkies and most other chickens. My children do not like store bought eggs. My 6 year old loves to be in the new chicken house. She is alwats with the birds as a result they follow her every where. The ducks are very timid. I don't think they have had much human interaction. I hope they calm down.
