Hi! I recently discovered backyard chickens and thought it would be useful to join. Lots of infomational posts! We Have six laying hens, all of which are some kind of rhode island red mix. However, one is the same breed (I think) But is pitch black. As the black one stands out, the rest pick on it. Poor thing! Do you know how a RIR mix could be black? Also, I have a terrible time getting ahold of our two newest chickens. We get them as adults from a large egg farm that sells them every few years when they are past their prime laying age. The older batch of chickens were skiddish as well, but it seems that I had them used to me in no time compared to these ones. (in fact, they were all eating out of our hands in a few weeks, while for the newer two it took months.)

I can't answer your question, but I will say

I have a RIR rooster, not 100% pure mind you, but him crossed with my black hen produced some black chicks, some turned out reddish as they grew up.
