Hi, I'm Len, and here's a bit about me and my birds!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We've had chickens for 2 years now. I wanted to try keeping a "few", and since the hatchery sold them in 10s, I figured I'd give the extras away. It turned out we really enjoyed them and kept them all. ...and added a rooster. ...and then added more and other birds!

(2/3) How many chickens do you have right now? What breeds?

25 chickens
- 13 Dominiques
- 12 Buckeyes
9 ducks
- 6 Roen
- 3 Cayuga
5 turkeys (Narragansett)
~50 quail (Brown Coturnix)

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Watching them, seeing my girls interact with them, and eggs!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

We recently moved to a bigger property to dive deeper into homesteading, and there's a lot to learn!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Me, my wife, two girls, dog, and cat moved to SD recently and we're loving it! Beautiful landscapes and wildlife, and the people are great, too!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I've been a long time lurker. In learning about keeping chickens, BYC has been a hugely helpful source of information.

You've clearly figured out that "chicken math" extends to other species! Among your flocks, my only experience is with Buckeyes, but I'm a fan. They are weather hardy, good layers and calm flock mates. Dominiques are on my wish list.

Congrats on your move to beautiful South Dakota; I've always appreciated its beauty and wildlife.

Welcome to BYC; hope you will be as happy here as you are in SD!
