Hi! I am Mandi! I live with my mom and I have Cerebral Palsy. I love animals and after Covid it wasn't always very safe to go into public places. My Mom thought having chickens would help give me something fun to do and help with instead of having to stay at home all the time. Two years ago we started our backyard flock. They are all my girls and each has a name and I love them all. My Mom created the chicken coop area so it was all adapted to me to be accessed in my wheelchair. Even the coops have walls four feet tall so I can see into the coops. There is a roof and cement floor so I can be in there anytime. Sometimes in the cold weather Mom will bring in a few to watch TV with me. I like that I am included in doing everything (including cleaning the coops). My favorite thing is Babychicking when I get to sit with the chicks. We just got two new chicks to put under one of my broody hens. The hardest thing for me to do is give my little roosters to new homes but I am happy that they have a good home. I just enjoy hearing about others experiences and stories with their chickens. Both my Mom and I never dreamed how much we would enjoy my girls. People always ask us if it is worth it for the eggs. We always say if it is just about the eggs I wouldn't do it but if you want to smile a lot and be fascinated by how smart they are, if you want excellent bug control, if you appreciate help with fertilizing and digging the garden or if you even want a little buddy to watch a movie with, go for it! The eggs are a perk!
