Hi I'm Mandy and a new chicken owner. They are taking over my 1/3 acre backyard. I'm trying to do it better.

Ah, Mandy, you are quickly discovering a down side to raising chickens -- the abundance of poop everywhere. Not only is my yard full of it, my deck is a frequent target, especially since the Cochins like to roost on the deck railing -- with their butts over the deck, of course.

Also, my yard used to have grass before the poultry decided to eat everything. Now, it has stepping stones that keep me from sinking into the mud where green plants used to grow.

And, yet, chickens (ducks and geese) are totally worth it!

Welcome to BYC, where a lot of nice and experienced folks will be happy to help you on your chicken-raising adventure!

Hello, Mandy, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Pen them. I had the same problems and then some. All before they were even 7 months old.
I bought three 164', 42" high poultry nets that are powered with a 10,000 volt charger and enclosed 1/3 of an acre just for them.
Everyone is happy now. I have a clean deck, porch, driveway, walkways, woodshed. I have flowers and shrubs and pretty undisturbed mulch. The chickens have their coop/run combo, 1/3 acre to use with lush grass, lots of their own not so pretty and well manicured shrubs and mulch, old wood chairs, pallets, wood saw horses, stumps and perches and they love their new territory.
