(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
When I was like, 5? 6? It's been a while. We first had two Rhode Island Reds and two others, who I can't remember. My brother and I were very little, so they had really funny names.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
36. Only partially intentionally. Apparently my mom buys chickens and then forgets about it. But they're my children now and I love them.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Do you want the list alphabetized, or in order of age? Lol.
Rhode Island White (as far as I can tell) and Red, True Blue Whitings, Black Australorps, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Olive Eggers, Speckled Sussex, Easter Eggers, Buff Orpingtons, and Salmon Favorelles.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Most recently I've loved just realizing how nice it is to get to know them? I've been spending a lot of time with the new chicks.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Reading, drawing, and spacing out existentially.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have so many pets. And so many coops? We had more but we moved here and tore the old ones down because they were rickety. But now we need more. We have so many chickens.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've only been really involved in the newest hatches of chickens, but I've known about it through my family who was taking care of them. Also I really learned because I was panicking about my chicks and needed advice. It didn't end up being enough to save the chick, but it was nice to know it was possible.
And then the other day I was sitting outside with the newest batch, babysitting, and decided to try and figure out why one of our SLW hens looked so much like a rooster. I bet you guys can guess… but I realized it seemed like a great place to introduce my flocks and share them with people who are as excited about them as me
hopefully… i’m pretty excited though…
I’ll tell the full story later lol. Probably my next post will be introducing my flock by name because I’m THAT chicken person.
