(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes & no. My neighbors have always had chickens who are ALWAYS in my yard. So, like a good "auntie" I enjoy them, engage with them, and they go home. I have no responsibility otherwise.
I just got my own flock & wonder, crap! what did I just do?
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 6 birds, 1.5 yr old chickens. They arrive next weekend (Labor day weekend)
(3) What breeds do you have? 2 buffs, 2 Americanas, 1 speckle, and 1 black chicken (I don't know what breed she is)
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? always known about it, just never had a reason to be here. Now I do!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I'm a baker (cakes, french pastries & confections, etc) so if you have questions in that realm, I can help you, but probably on this forum. I also have a small farm with 8 alpacas (they are pets) from whom I make and sell yarn.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. The above noted alpacas will be the chickens new roommates, along with 2 feral barn cats who are slowly become domesticated.
(7) My question to the group: As a brand new chicken owner, I'm interested in your favorite/best tip(s) on chicken care, how to acclimate them, become their best friend, feeding recommendations, etc.
Thanks for reading and looking forward to learning from and getting to know you.
