Hi all; I live in Spokane, Washington and I've had my first chickens, a pair of Australorp pullets, for about a month now. I named them Tim and Tam (even though they're both girls) because Australorps are of course an Australian breed originally, and Tim-Tams, which are my favorite kind of cookie, are also Australian in origin. (I discovered Tim-Tams on a trip to Australia in 2003.) I had wanted chickens for a really long time, and so far my girls are living up to all my hopes and expectations - well except the eggs but that'll come in time. I was told they were two months old when I got them, so I expect them to start laying in another couple months. Meantime they are just as sweet as pie and so fun to watch. When I go out to weed my yard, they fall in step with me and the three of us all peck our way around the perimeter of the yard together! Nothing's ever gonna make weeding fun, but this is the closest it's ever been, lol! I'm in the suburbs and even my neighbors are enchanted and tell me they love watching them. I look forward to getting to know the folks in this forum - so far, "Backyard Chickens" has been an excellent and user-friendly resource for a chicken newbie like me!
