I have six laying hens, four are Sussex hybrids (two are retired, Peck & Benny...as in eggs Benedict, and two are fairly new layers, Cleo & Cluck. I have a Buff Orpington/Barred Rock cross named Souffle; she has not started laying quite yet, and last but not least I just got a Black Copper Maran who is almost at the point of lay. This girl hasn't got a name yet...I have only had her for four days and am trying to get a sense of her personality. She is a no nonsense bird, and when the others tried to hen-peck her...she would have no part of it and pecked right back...what a glorious moment seeing this. The girls were shocked and let her into the flock without any further ado. When Souffle was introduced, the other four beat the heck out of her for almost a month, so I was glad when my pretty new girl held her ground. Souffle is a bit of a cry baby and hid in a corner instead of standing up for herself.
Sometimes I feel like the Pied Piper the way the girls run to me, and follow me, for treats; it is quite heart-warming.
We just have a few hens for the sake of having our own lovely and healthy eggs; other than the girls I have one full-sized horse and one miniature horse. With they girls and boys, and a f/t job, I am very busy. Chickens are interesting...and stinky
