Hi fellow chicken owners! I'm the owner of a medium-sized flock of chickens, and we own ducks as well! Our property is located near the Missouri River, hence the name! I'm very excited to soon be meeting other people from around the world who share the same interests as I do, and are willing to answer any questions I might have.
Here's a bit about me and my flock:
(1) I've had my little friendly flock since summer of 2020. Since then, a few of our beloved chickens have sadly passed due to old age, but our flock stays going strong! We have 9 laying hens and 1 very charming Easter Egger rooster named Henry. We also have two pullet hens around 2-3 months old, a Buff Orpington and a Barred Rock, who currently live with our ducks and will move to the main coop very soon!
(2) As said before, our wonderful feathery flock is made up of 9 laying hens, two pullet hens, and 1 rooster! They all come together to form our very own Riverside Flock!
(3) Here are the full 12 feathery friends that make up our Riverside Flock!
3 Rhode Island Red & Easter Egger Barnyard Mixes
1 Sapphire Gem & Easter Egger Barnyard Mix
1 Easter Egger & Welsummer Barnyard Mix
1 White Easter Egger
1 Barred Rock
2 Sapphire Gems
1 Barred Rock Pullet Hen
1 Buff Orpington Pullet Hen
1 Easter Egger Rooster
-- And three friendly American Pekin ducks!
(4) The best thing I love about chickens is their personalities! It's so entertaining to observe them pecking around their run, sharing a treat of iceberg lettuce with their rooster, scratching around in the dirt for worms while free-ranging, even just perching for the night or sitting in their nesting boxes! I can never get tired of watching them and appreciating them. I also love the endless supply of fresh eggs! We've never had to buy a single carton of eggs from the grocery store since 2020. Also, they come in fun colors compared to the plain white grocery store eggs, like olive-green, speckled brown, and turquoise. Plus, they're way more nutritious! Another last thing I love about chickens is that they're super helpful! They eat tons of mosquitos, flies, snails, and even ticks, ridding your garden of annoying pests! They also can eat small snakes and even rodents, which are quite fun to watch them catch.
(5) On my side time, I also hand-raise our Pekin ducks and interact with our pullet hens before they're moved to the main coop, making sure they're properly socialized! I enjoy working with graphic design, which includes making visual concepts, posters, and brand logos. I'm always on the lookout for new places in my community to design visual media for. My love for animals extents way past chickens and ducks, as well. I have a love for all animals, and have a strong will to make sure all animals are handled with love and are fed and treated correctly. I look for spots in any conversation to practice wildlife conservation or point out facts about certain animals. I'm also extremely righteous about animal mistreatment, abuse and other issues that decimate wildlife or their environments. I want to become a wildlife conservationist in the future!
(6) As well as my flock of ducks and chickens, I have some friendly barn cats and some rabbits! I'd like to explore the world of reptiles someday when I'm in the right place to do so.
I hope you'll all welcome me to BYC!
