We have three silkie bantam's. We purchased them in may and they are growing fast. They are 14 weeks old and we are not sure what sex they are yet. Two of them just found their voice yesterday. What a show. These two ,we think are rooters. Can anyone tell us if a rooster always crows or do they make other noise first before they crow?

Silkies are very hard to sex - breeders usually wait till 4-5 mos. old before doing so. There are several dedicated silkies threads on BYC, and the posters generally are very experienced. You might want to post photos on "The Silkie Thread," to ask about gender, or anything else. Photos should be clear, closeups of the face and any comb that might be showing. also a profile shot . If you put Silkie Thread in the search box it should pop up

Thank-You for the warm welcome. This is one of my silkie chick's . Her name is Lovie. She got her name because as a little chick she would close her eye's every time you would hold her and some times even go to sleep. Now all three of our chickens scream bloody murder when we pick them up. My problem is I don't think she is a she!!! We also bought her as a silkie bantum not really sure that is true either. She is much bigger than the other two but Dottie the one she fights the most with is not much smaller. Dottie's sex is questionable also but she likes to keep her distance and it is hard to get a good picture of her face. I say her because that is what I want it to be. Can anyone tell if Lovie looks like a rooster by these pictures? They are 14 weeks old.
