Hi, my name is Andrea, I am in the beginning stages of prep. I've never had my own chickens but family has.

I plan on getting an 8x8 shed and a 10 foot run that is 6 foot high with a top for protection. My family hears about my plans and say my chickens will be spoiled 😁. I'll also be collecting the rain water for them.

Planning on getting only 6-8, I have no idea what breeds to get but want a variety. And have no idea where to get them yet. I want to start from baby so they know us well. I don't mind waiting for eggs.

I'm looking forward to eggs but more so the chicky cuddles.

I have 5 acres, slopped land but we will make it work. I have three kids, two are adults, last one is 16 they are all looking forward to seeing the new adventure play out. I have three dogs and two inside cats. My husband is all about it as well.

Just heard about the group from a friend. This page looks different than the screenshot she sent me but you all look amazing. Thanks for the add, I'm sure I'll be asking lots of questions....if it's not already in the FAQ section.

Welcome to BYC!! What breed are you looking to get?

Welcome to BYC!

If you are having trouble deciding on breeds you can check out the Chicken Breeds list and look through some of the more popular breeds. There are many breeds out there that are not listed so look around other places for ideas. Your location, how much you want eggs, if you will be using for meat, should all apply when picking a breed. When it comes to buying chicks there are a few different options. You can buy from your local feed store during the chick days season (almost over), buy from a local breeder, or buy from an online hatchery.

Best of luck of luck with starting your journey!
