Hi, I'm brand new to chickens -- grew up in the city and was never around them before! But we are renting 2 red stars for the summer, with the thought of keeping them at the end of the rental. We have a small-ish suburban backyard (maybe 1/4 acre), and I'm trying to figure out how to give the chickens their own area where I won't have to worry about the grass disappearing. They're currently in a moveable coop and run with wire on the bottom of the run, and the grass is already quite gone in one area of the yard. Thinking I'll add some wood chips in that area and just make that the chicken corner, rather than continuing to move the run and coop around. Would love advice! We've got three kids and are very much enjoying the ladies so far.
