Hi Everyone,

I am new to posting in the forums, I read the emails that I get daily. I am fairly new to the chicken world. This is our 3rd summer upcoming and it has been a learning curve.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We 'rented' chickens and a coop in the summer of 21. Just to see if it was for us. It wasn't a winterized coop (the farm typically takes the chickens/coop back for the winter and you have the option of first refusal for the next summer). I bought the hens and gave them to a cousin to keep in his coop for the winter.
Very long story short - have lost all 3 to wildlife and got day olds last summer to raise. Lost two of them (one was a rooster) to a fox in broad daylight so they are no longer allowed to free range. We replaced the rooster from a woman who was looking to get rid of her silkie.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
3 hens and a rooster.

(3) What breeds do you have?

The rooster is a silkie and one Barred Plymouth Rock and 2 of the hens are Noiran (I think lol)

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

They are so funny and love watching them. Their ability to reduce our tick population was a bonus so I am sad I can't just let them roam free. I really want to try having them raise chicks the natural way and so will be scouring for tips and tricks on this website.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I attempt gardening but not really a green thumb, paper crafting and attending concerts are my other favourite pasttimes

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

4 children (1 teenager and 3 young adults) all at home right now, husband, 2 dogs, 3 cats, hamster, fish and the chickens. I am a Registered Early Childhood Educator and am enjoying the chicken adventure and documenting it to share with the families I work with.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

a couple of years - mostly reading the emails. Found when doing research to build our coop. Want to have them roost and raise chicks so need some help!

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.
