Hi there from our offgrid home we fondly call Dunshire Ranch!
We are not new to chickens - we first got chickens when I was young, living on a dairy farm in Oregon. After I was married, we bought a home and acreage in WA state in 2004. It was then, that I had my first batch of my own chickens.
We now own 44 acres, offgrid on a mountain in Eastern Oregon. We call it Dunshire, which is Gaelic for Fortress House - Dunshire Ranch is our home!
We always seem to have chickens. Right now I have (5) 2yr old Hens and (13) pullets.
Ive always had a variety of breeds. Right now I have 6-blue and black Marans, 3-Rhode Island Reds, 2-Americaunas, 2-White Leghorn, 2-Welsummers, 2-Wyandottes - I have others in the incubation process - hopeful to get some guinea Hens in a few weeks too!
My favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens is the eggs of course - and watching the family grow!
Some of my other hobbies are cooking and gardening - because it helps provide for my family! I’m a chicken momma and love raising them! I’m not a breeder but do have a history as an animal behaviorist. We operated a Pet and Farm sitting company for the last 15 years, and had 12 contractors working for us, plus 150 clients. We ended up closing the business and moving to eastern Oregon in 2020.
Our family is a little spread out - my three kids are grown and out of the house. My son is a truck driver and has given us two grandsons (ages 5 & 6) who visit often from the other side of the state. My som lives with my mom and takes care of her; my youngest is my daughter - she is married to an Army guy and they live in Colorado right now. We also have an Aussie dog named Piper and two cats named Mochi and Bisou.
My husband and I are both former Navy - he is retired from 26yrs of service and I did 9. He is now a postal worker for his last few years left of federal service. I am a Director of a Nonprofit, advocating against domestic violence and abuse. We will soon both be retiring from working for others & starting our own Nonprofit Offgrid Self Reliance Homestead program on our mountain ranch. We hope to start it in maybe in the spring. We live simple and have a lot of animal, offgrid & homesteading wisdom to impart! We plan to teach and share our land with other offgrid tenant farmers …who want this same kind of simple life!
I will share some pictures of our family and homestead here. Ask me anything you want to know about chickens or our homestead - I’m happy to have found such an awesome chick-momma community?
