In the Brooder
Hello everyone! I'm Deanna and my husband (Don) and I became chicken parents about 3 weeks ago when we got our first ever chicks (as a couple, anyway). They're currently in the brooder in our now dusty basement and will be going out to the coop in the next few weeks. Introductory Q&A below:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? My husband was raised with chickens, but I'm brand new to it all. He's been amazing with all of it, and is even building the coop and run using his own design.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 12 pullets
(3) What breeds do you have? 4 Barred Rocks, 4 New Hampshire Reds, 4 Delawares
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I'm kind of hoping they'll be like dogs with feathers (although I'm not unrealistic about that), and I'm excited to have new pets with benefits (eggs, manure). I love animals, so I'm totally looking forward to spoiling them rotten.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Gardening, crochet, canning, baking, self sufficiency
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Don and I are empty nesters with a cat named Penny and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi named Trixie. Trixie hasn't really had the opportunity to do any herding, but she might get a shot at it if we have trouble rounding everyone up in the back yard. She's a pretty gentle dog, so we're not sure if she will take charge or if the chickens will.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I just found this site today when I was searching why one of my chicks is so much bigger than the others. I'm excited to join a group of people to learn from and share with.
