I'm going on my third year of having chickens. Started with 3 sexlinks. Now I have 2 and 5 Peach Orpingtons. One of my Orpies was broody so my son gave me 7 fertile eggs. Now I have 7 3 weeks old chicks, 4 Black Wyandotte and 3 I'm not sure of but they are beautiful! I wanted to have them free range but with a Pitt Bull who killed one and will eat their poop I don't do that anymore, wish I could.

Well, on to the section to ask my question.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear your dog killed one of your chickens :hugs It's a shame you can't free range with having the dog, could you maybe free range under supervision whilst your dog is locked away securely? Sounds like your broody did a good job with the eggs and now chicks.

Be sure to ask all the questions you have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Great that your broody had a 100% hatch rate. I don't know that your pitty will ever be trustworthy around the chickens, since he has already killed one. The best thing for your chickens is to make sure dogs and chickens NEVER meet again.

Welcome to BYC I agree with DD your dog will have a taste for chicken now and they love chicken - it is a shame but you will have to keep him away from the chooks. Can you not fence off some part for them to roam free?

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sounds like you have a lovely flock of great breeds! Sorry to hear of the one you lost to the pitt bull.

I like the buff orpington in your avatar! They are my favorite breed. I have three myself and I just adore them!
