I am brand new to chickens, anxiously awaiting delivery of my first baby chicks.

I ordered a mixed package of 10 female chicks, so we shall see what I actually end up with, seeing as sexing is only about 90% accurate, and breeds will also be a surprise 🤔

My favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens are yet to be determined 🤷‍♀️

Other hobbies include gardening, beekeeping, crocheting, sewing, crafts, traveling, and so on.

Kids are grown, no grands, yet. 3 rowdy dogs, 1 rowdy cat to keep them in line 😂, and 2 fish aquariums. Bees will be here in April. Maybe 1 day I can figure out how to have a koi pond in the upcoming fairy garden. (I'm not a busy person at all, can you tell? 🤣)

I happened across BYC today when searching Google to see what size hardware cloth to use to help prevent snakes and other predators in my coop, to be put together this coming week. Pictures will be forthcoming, as I'm still getting the newly erected greenhouse situated tomorrow.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

So glad you decided to join our community! I started with 1/2 inch hardware cloth but found that baby mice and small snakes could fit through it. So I covered over the 1/2 inch with 1/4 inch cloth. 1/4 inch is definitely thinner than 1/2, but 1/4 does keep the tiny stuff out. If you use shorter runs of the 1/4, it should be sturdy enough.

Make yourself at home here and welcome aboard!

Thank you. I haven't opened the coop kit yet to see what size is used on it, but I want to put a coop apron on it, so that's what I was looking at. I may need to add am extra layer to what it came with, but won't know that until I put it up. I have time before the chicks are old enough to be set loose in it, so no rush, trying to get all my info and prices gathered so I can give hubby a number lol If he strings me up, at least he'll have eggs 😂
