Hi there everyone!
I just want to introduce myself and say that I am very excited to join this community and get to learn more about how to raise my chickens to be strong healthy and happy layers! I am a first time chicken mama and really trying to trust the process like I have been advised! I have 5, nearly 14 week old sapphire gem hens that I have raised from 1-2 days old! We had 6 however one turned out to be a rooster which we drove over to a farm a week ago :) ( I told myself not to get to attached because life is unpredictable but alas it was difficult to give him away anyway!) We live in the PA suburbs with a nicely sized backyard, lots of greenery and trees and we have two dogs and a cat. Through raising these lovely ladies ( and one rooster!) I have learned so much about how chicks grow up and had many a questions answered about pasty bum to chick crumbles and brooder temp on this forum before today deciding to join! Our journey started by my endless covid project of researching the benefits of backyard chickens and eggs and then saving up for a coop and run which I purchased both used and re-enforced myself with much help from my family. We got our chicks from TSC in thebeginning of march- which I soon after realized may have been a little bit early, however my eagerness got the better of me! I called TSC twice everyday for a week seeing if the chicks had arrived yet!! But through all the hurdles and anxiety I am so grateful that they have all survived ( fingers crossed 🤞🏻 so far!) and they seem so happy in their coop and run! I will be asking questions in new threads about new things coming up in this journey, like free ranging more and predators, and dogs with chickens and in the next few months… eggs! I’m excited to share these fun milestones with other animals lovers who enjoy the small things in this crazy world!
Stay groovy!
