I'm an Army wife and we just moved to Louisiana 3 weeks ago. We've bought a home on 5 acres surrounded on 3 sides by wooded acreage. I have the Brinsea Mini Advance incubator set up and we are expecting 7 French Standard Black Copper Marans eggs next week. We are also expecting 5 White Leghorn chicks (our son's choice), 3 Red Star chicks (our daughter's choice) and 5 Easter Egger chicks (my choice, although I did not know when we ordered that they will not all lay blue eggs) in about four weeks.
I found Backyard Chickens when searching for fertile Guinea eggs for hatching. Unfortunately we have many snakes in our part of Louisiana and this evening found our most recent visitor right on our front doorstep! Now we want Guineas for snake control.
We will begin building our coop tomorrow so any advice would be much appreciated. We plan to keep the chickens and guineas separate for roosting. The chickens will have a coop (15'x12') and run (15'x18') and free range only when we are home. The guineas will have a coop (what size?), but no run as they will be out to free range all day.
I'm looking forward to learning from those of you who are experienced in keeping chickens and guineas!
