Hi, Hi,
I am in NW Florida and my husband and I are thinking of adding a few chickens to family in the hopes of collecting fresh eggs. We had a baby 11 month ago after a very difficult pregnancy and have become more aware of 1) how much $$ we spend and ways to save pennies here and there and 2)what goes into or onto our bodies and are trying to go as organic as possible. My husband kept chickens as a child and we've been talking of getting a few chicks for a couple of years but now we are more motivated to actualy go through with it. We don't have a coop yet but the husband has plans for them
I have been nosing around the learning center for a couple of days now mostly looking at different breeds which I hope I can find locally since I don't want to order a whole bunch of them from a hatchery. We are aiming to start off with 2-4. My inlaws called us this past weekend and out of the blue informed us that they had built a chicken coop and wanted us to go to the local feed store here and bring them some chicks to raise. They don't want to make the 40 minute drive to where we live to buy their own. The husband and I figured we might be able to go ahead and get out two chicks this week depending on what the feed store has. Am I correct in assuming that the selection might be limited this time of year? We'll see... maybe we will have to wait on getting out own for a couple of month. From browsing this site I think I want Australorps to start off. So anywhere, there is my introduction
lol. I'm sure I will have a ton more questions in the near future.
