I have been a full-time chemistry teacher in NY state for about 20 years after a 10 year career as a microbiology technologist. I've been happily married for 27 years to a great guy who is a patient care coordinator (nurse/director) for a busy hospital emergency room. I have two children, ages 25 and 23, who are about to "leave the nest." I've been raising alpacas, llamas and chickens for about 4 years. Originally, I got the chickens to eat the ticks and decrease the parasite population for the camelids (alpacas and llamas) I raise. I currently have 3 llamas, 16 alpacas, 17 chickens, 2 cats and a dog. I initially got a lot of information from Back Yard Chicken site when I started raising chickens. It's a great resource! I had about five Buff Orphington mixed hens and one Brown Leghorn. However, this spring I added 6 White Lehorns which was an impulse buy. The guy at the store insisted that they laid brown eggs. They had no other chicks at the time, so I brought them home. Of course, I confirmed they lay white eggs, as I thought; but my daughter had already fallen in love with them. So, I bought 6 more Golden Comets when the store got some more chicks in, since I know they lay brown eggs. Well, now they are all just about full grown, and they sure do make a mess of my barn; but they are fun!
