Hello everybody! I have been on BYC many MANY times in my quest to raise chickens and I finally decided to become a member so that I can be a part of the conversations.

I am originally from the Denver area in Colorado and wanted to have chickens for many years but was unable to because of the weird laws regarding chickens in my area (like that if you have 3 chickens they are considered pets and you can have them pretty much anywhere but if you have 4 or more they are considered livestock and your land has to be zoned properly

). Now I have relocated to Sevierville Tennessee and my loving fiance and I live in a very rural area so I have FINALLY, after all of these years, gotten my first chickens

. Luckily, we share the love of having chickens scratch around the yard! We had 2 hand-me-down bantam hens and 2 bantam roosters (don't ask me what kind because I have absolutely no idea). In February (during an especially cold weather snap), one of our hens laid and hatched out 7 chicks (3 roosters and 4 hens) and our second hen hatched her 9 babies just about a week ago! Sadly, 2 of the new little chicks didn't make it but the other 7 are healthy and happy. Needless to say I am tickled to death with the new additions!

I know very little about chickens and having these ones running around has been an excellent and enjoyable learning experience for me. I look forward to being an active part of the threads here on BYC!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

The first baby that died was the last to hatch...almost a day after #8. The egg had rolled out of the nest and hatched there. When I found him he was just about frozen to death and barely breathing. I warmed the little guy up and re-introduced him to mom but he couldn't keep up with the other chicks and was kind of sickly and he was chirping constantly...the "crying" kind of chirp. He died 2 days later...I expected it but it still made me sad. The other little chick just disappeared...we live in the woods so there's no telling what kind of critter got it. I'd say we've been very lucky considering that we live in such a rural area.
