Hi,
I've been thinking about having chickens in my large yard (I live in a city that allows hens, but not roosters). I grew up with chickens, and loved the bantams the most. They wouldn't go into the coop with the large chickens, and just roosted in the trees. They were such good flyers that they were rarely bothered by predators. I'm most interested in considering bantams, finding out what people here know about the various types, which are the best flyers, etc.

Chickens, bantams especially, should be cooped at night. Roosting in trees just makes them a better target for predators like raccoons or owls. Birds don't care to move in the dark, so they become sitting ducks. Good luck with your flock.

I like silkie bantams the Black ones are my faves

I would second drumstick diva on providing them a coop you can lock them up in at night to keep them safe.

not sure why our free flying bantams did so well (when i look at pics now, i wonder if they were jungle fowl). Maybe because we had three dogs. They tended to bark when predators came close to the house at night. We also had geese that were good at hollering when disturbed in any way. The bantams and our peacock roosted in a big maple right over the roof of our house.

but now, i don't have dogs. I'm wondering what makes bantams interested in coming in at night. Ours never wanted to, but they were multi-generational, and perhaps learned their habits from their moms only, despite our attempts at coaxing.

Oh, bantams in my opinion are best in the pet factor, more for friends than food, as they lay small eggs and are small themselves, but very friendly
