I am never entirely sure where to start when introducing myself in a new community, so here we go....

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Brand new! I've wanted to raise chickens (along with other homesteading concepts) for a few years now. We just recently decided that we will begin our flock in the spring!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None yet.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I'm not sure what breeds we should be looking at. Just one of the many things I'm looking forward to learning over the coming months!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Web searches brought me here.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy cooking a lot. Reading, watching movies with the family, music, card games... I've also recently learned to ride a dirt bike! That's been a blast. I'm proud to say I have yet to crash it! (Though I'm sure I will eventually.)
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We're a family of 8 right now. Myself and my husband, our 14 year old boy, 7 year old boy, 11 year old boxer mix ("The Grouchy Old Lady"), 1 year old terrier/shepard mix ("The Big Oaf"), the cat (who has zero grace and isn't very bright, but is sweet as could be), and lastly the red tailed boa (who we got somewhere around 9 years ago simply because he needed a home and everyone else was afraid of him.) I am the general manager of a quick casual restaurant that I'm pretty proud of. It's still the lowest volume location in our franchise, but it's grown leaps and bounds since I took it over 3 years ago. However, I'd walk away from it in a heartbeat if I had the opportunity to be a homesteading, homeschooling mom. :)

Hi Emilie, it's nice to have you here. Thanks for the interesting intro!

Since you like to cook, come drop in on our baking thread (the link is at the bottom of my post). You might also like to check out this article in the Learning Center for tips on how to select a chicken breed:Pickin' the Right Frickin' Chicken: Guide to Picking Backyard Chicken Breeds

Best of luck to you!

Hello Emilie. Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as a new chicken owner. :)

If you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • For general education, spend some time browsing the Articles link above and possibly the Learning Center. You will find excellent information for both newbies and long-time chicken owners there.
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even it has been asked 100 times before.
Good on you for putting in the time to research before bringing in your chickens. They should be much better off for your effort.

Good luck and enjoy your time here.

Welcome to BYC Emilie. Lots to learn here on all of the different forums. It helps to learn as much as you can before you get the chicks, build a big enough coop and run, choose breeds wisely, and get them all at once so you don't bring in unwanted diseases. I like having different breeds and egg colors so I can tell mine apart. Some hatcheries will let you order fewer chicks than others.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're thrilled that you've decided to join us:ya
