Greetings from Indiana,
My name is Barbara and I am brand new to raising chickens but I've been looking forward to it for a long time.
My son started raising chickens about three years ago and I've been seriously talking about it since then. Well today he brought me a chicken coop! I don't have any chickens yet, but I plan on getting some in the very near future.
I am an avid cook, love to camp, travel, knit, read and spend time with my family. My husband is awesome and my best friend and partner in crime. I work nights at a small rural hospital in the laboratory.
I found this site by chance when I googled Raising Backyard Chickens 101. It looks like there is a ton of information here and I will be voraciously reading as much as I can.

Here's to raising chickens!

Hello, Barbara, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You will definitely find a ton of information here.
What kind of coop did your son buy you? Do you know what breed(s) of chickens you want and how many?

Hello Barbara. Welcome to BYC! Nice to see another Hoosier here.
  • You should say hello in the Indiana BYCer thread.
  • You also might want to enter your general location here. That makes it easier for people to answer questions appropriate for your area.
Plenty of good and helpful people here. Keep reading and ask questions. You are doing the right thing by educating yourself before bringing in chickens. They will benefit from your effort.

One warning- if that is a prefab coop, then they *always* overestimate how many birds it can comfortably hold. Mine says it can hold 8, but is on the tight side with three.
