Hi

Hello and welcome! We love questions, so feel free to ask anything! What breeds are you thinking about getting? Barred Plymouth Rocks, and Rhode Island Reds are good starters, because they are good layers, kid friendly, and very weather hardy. Good luck!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Stop by our Learning Center for lots of good reading on all the aspects of keeping chickens... https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

Here is a great article on picking breeds... https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...ide-to-picking-backyard-chicken-breeds.64518/

As for keeping them warm in the winter, you never add heat to a coop. Chickens are quite capable of keeping themselves alive and warm even in temps well below zero. Make SURE to add adequate vent space in your eaves to air off all moisture the birds will produce, keep the coop dry and huge draft free and they will thrive year round.

Make yourself at home here and ask as many questions as needed. Welcome aboard!

I just got back from town "feed store" and saw a box of Barred Rock chicks on the counter, someone was buying. So cute it almost hurt! Brought a big smile to my face! :D
