City Chick 2020
Chirping
Hi everyone.
I had chickens when I was a girl and we lived out from the city and then we moved very inner-city and, amazingly, we had to raise a chicken to teach us parenting in year 7. Most kids gave theirs back but of course I kept mine and kept her and a friend until she passed away many years later.
Now, finally, I am in a position to have my very own flock!!!!!!!!!!!!
I roped my poor hubbyand niece and nephew in to helping me upcycle an old swing set and lots or=f recycled materials (and some new) into a fantastic coop.
I have bought 8 Australorp chicks (expecting ~50% to be males who will be re-homed) who are now 6 weeks old (6 black and 2 blue - although one of the blacks looks half blue and one of the blacks has two orange feathers on her middle back hehe) and have just spent their second night outside.
One (named Mr Mags by my nephew) little poor thint seems to be a runt and so far is less than half the size of the others but we will see if he catches up. I am hoping to buy some probiotics for him today As I learned about it on this thread.
Chickens are the best. Their little faces and personalities just warm my heart. I adore them and their scratching and chirping, not to mention their beautiful feathers.
I have a ridgeback girl who is struggling to not chase the chicks but I have been introducing them since the chicks were 1.5 weeks old and things are progressing. I have zero faith that I will ever be able to leave her alone with them but in time I might be able to have them all out together if I am there - and also know that if one escapes somehow I will have time to catch her as my dog knows they are not ‘for her’. Aw. I have seen pics on the web of dogs lying down covered in fluffy baby chicks but the ideal is never real life huh? Lol
Anyway, I have been reading threads on here on and off for years while I wished for my own flock and have found the group so useful since getting my girls and boys that I thought I should actually join!
