Hi!
We brought home our first flock of babies in September of 2021.
We started with 3 baby pullet chicks, thankfully someone with experience helped us sex them:
1 Sapphire Gem
1 Barred Rock
1 Sapphire Olive Egger
I felt our little flock was incomplete and we went back two days later and brought home:
a second, scrappy little Barred Rock - she is a linebacker and protects the other girls
My favorite aspects about raising hens is that they are great therapy! I love watching them scratch, forage, purr, and hop up on my arm chair and look at me.
I love watching how their heritage instincts kick in and they just do chicken stuff. We also love collecting and eating the eggs, how lovely they look in our farmhouse kitchen, and we enjoy sharing with our neighbors.
I also enjoy gardening, meditation, prayer, nutrition, and walks.
We also have a cat. The second barred rock at full-sized hen stared her down, and they made an agreement right then and there. The cat doesn't mess with them!
I love that they all get along well.
I have been coming to BYC for the past couple of years as we were researching our flock for good backyard breeds, proper care and home remedies.
