I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Kellie from northern virginia. I have been stalking this place for months now and figured I should just join already!

Looking forward to diving right in!

I have three Buff Orpington's and three 5 month old chicks. One is a frizzled Cochin hen, one is a beautiful Australorp roo, and a gorgeous frizzles splash roo. At least we are almost positive they are both roosters. They do not let me get anywhere near my Cochin and seem to be working together right now. I'm imagining that's not going to last for much longer.

These are two of my frizzles when they were babies. I deleted the rest off my phone the other day to clear up some space.

My splash rooster. He's always been so sweet and I went to pet him this morning and he but me and drew blood. Rose up like cockerels do and everything. I was really surprised. We aren't speaking to each other at the moment.

Too many cockerels and too little hen. A rooster can take care of 10 hens - when there are more roosters and less hens per each, the girls get overbred and can be damaged. The roosters will also be fighting over who gets what.

You don't need to have roosters to get eggs. You only need them if you desire fertile eggs. The one that attacked you isn't kidding around. You may want to put "aggressive roosters," in the search box for advice on dealing with one.

Thanks. I am going to be getting rid of one of them. My brother is moving onto three acres of land and he has about 16 chickens. I'm going to give him one. We are keeping one because we would like to hatch out of our flock at least a few times. The roosters aren't even attempting to mate with any of the chickens yet and my cochin frizzle doesn't seem to be close to laying. We are in Virginia and have had a very hard winter so I am not surprised. He was fine the rest of the day. Coming up to sit next to me on the porch, eating some treats out of my hand. The normal way he is. I have just never seen him protect the little cochin before. Was surprising.
