Welcome to BYC! I recommend using 1/4 inch hardware cloth (very strong mesh wire) instead of chain link, many predators can reach thru chain link and grab a chicken. Best of luck to you.

Welcome to BYC, and X2 on the hardware cloth. You've received some good links from other BYC members. What kind of chickens do you have?

x 3 on the hardware cloth. Raccoons especially like to reach in and will bite off any body part they can snag, causing horrendous pain, suffering and usually death. A cover on your run will keep hawks out, and some of the climbers/jumpers like coyotes. Be sure nothing can dig under the sides of your run also.

Please check out the predator section to get some insight on how this nasty critters think and act.

I do appreciate all of the good Run suggestions - I plan on incorporating pretty much all of them and more. I have lamented to anyone that will listen that 'chicken wire' is only good for displaying what is on the menu for predators! All I have for now is netting over the top and and a solar flashing "eye" mounted on the coop facing the forest, but the digging down and installing the hardware cloth under the outside fencing has to be done - the materials purchased just looking for the energy to begin digging - lol. Or maybe young neighbor kids? Hmmm.

I really only know the breeds of the "second generation" - which are the chicks I recently purchased: (3) Barred Rocks and (2) Brown Leghorns.
The "first generation" (or Survivors as I sometimes call them appear to consist of (1) Australorp (Regina - definitely queen of the roost), (2) red hens that are likely Red Sex Links or maybe Production and (2) scrappy hens that could be EasterEggers or maybe Legbars.
What I do know is that I've got only colored eggs: mint and light brown eggs and perhaps a slightly darker brown egg too.

You've got a good bunch of layers there. If the two red hens have white feathers in their tails, they are Red Sex Links. If not, they are Production Reds. The mint colored eggs are coming from your two scrappy Easter Eggers. Good luck with your flock.
