I have a betta fish and a parakeet and 2 family pets, a beagle/rat terrier mix and a persian/? cat mix . My family has a one acre backyard. I want to have ducks, geese, chickens, peafowl,or swans someday, but I don't know anything about them except that they are cute. I guess I will learn that on this website! But if I get in love with one of them, how should I go convincing my parents(or husband,if I can't get them for a long time) ? I really like birds.

You sure have come to the right place for all the fun and learning!

If you have any specific questions about any of the birds you listed, feel free to ask around the forums.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC!!

Having that many animals in just an acre would be complicated, and the fact that you know almost nothing about them poses and even larger problem I'm afraid.

Chickens are FABULOUS! They can be energetic escape artist though.. Most certainly would recommend them, as they bring you one step closer to being self reliant.

Swan's are quite feisty and can actually be dangerous.. they need a lake or a pond to chillax.

Ducks are little poop factories and can be pretty noisy, and unless you like being followed to the school bus in the morning you're gonna have to keep them locked up.

Geese.. Hmm, that one isn't really my area of expertise but I don't recommend them. I know people who have had them, they regretted getting them or totally loved them. It depends on the person.

Just to help you out a lil, I wish I knew more.

Good luck in your hopes and plans.

@Lil Miss Sugar has given you some really good information.

IMO you should narrow down what you want to start with. Study the learning center articles on what is involved in raising, housing, protecting the poultry of your choice. Be armed with real information and expectations to begin those discussions toward getting a flock compatible with your situation.

The Learning Center would be a great start for you - the information it presents can be applied to various poultry. From there you can decide to investigate, geese, ducks, chickens, etc. and on the various threads. Good luck.
