Has anyone experienced this?

We just got a coop through an urban chicken project. When I announced it on facebook, someone posted this on my wall.

Jen did you ask about your house insurance, we just had to set up new house insurance and we were told there would be a very big premium on homes with chicken coops

Definitely not something I thought about looking in to.... Why would that be?

it would depend on who your insurance is with...

for my policy it counts an an external dwelling and would normally be part of a policy.. my building itself is covered but the contents of the building are not.. when i decide to pack it in with chickens and convert my coop to a drive shed or equipment shed.. then i call my insurance and send them pics of the internal and they will adjust the policy.

the will cover my livestock for an additional fee (huge jump) but if i opt out of livestock coverage which i have then then its included as an external dwelling

I am in Canada so it may be different.

when i inquired about the cost difference she said its cause the heat lamps and dust and other factors it raises the chance of a fire

What if it has no electricity and is portable? I haven't even thought about calling my insurance company...

I have no Idea..

When I called my insurance and told them about a new building she asked what it was for and if it had power or running water... I said yes to the electric and no to the water and thats when she asked if we are insuring the livestock too and explained the cost difference..

Thanks for your replies - I'm in Canada also! I don't have any heat or running water, and really, if the coop gets destroyed - it's going to be cheaper to rebuild it than insurance! (Unless I'm looking at upgrading!)

so because I am not going to be claiming any exotic grown dwelling parrots or the rarest chicken known to man cause i dont have livestock coverage i didnt have to pay extra...

but if you think about it... someone builds a small barn and starts breeding or housing prize winning race horses.... that can be an expensive claim!

it would cost me about $2000 to rebuild my coop if something happened so I would be filing a claim if something happened...lol
