(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Not new - I had so many chickens, guineas, ducks, turkeys growing up. All sorts of breeds and loved them like crazy. After we moved off our farm, unfortunately we had to sell them all
talk about hard - anyways I just got married October 2017 and finallllllly was able to convince my husband to get a few chickens, and well that grew into a lot more - ha! Lucky me!
(2 + 3) How many chickens do you have right now? What breeds?
27 chickens (including 4 roosters) - I have some seabrights, rhode island reds, wheaton marans, black copper marans, polish, silkies, blue laced wayndottes, speckled sussex, ameraucanas, a couple mixed cochins, and a white orpington.
6 turkeys - I have a chocolate turkey (Twix), 2 bronze breasted turkeys (Albert and Turk), Dixie (fall fire hen), and an Orgeon grey turkey (Tom)
2 ducks - 1 mallard drake and a appleyard hen (Bonnie and Clyde)
2 pheasants - 2 hens that are cray cray! LOL
1 goose - Gan Gan
- And yes all almost all them have names - they're basically my kids - ha!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Being able to come home to them every day is an awesome feeling! When I have a bad day at work, I come home and pull up in my driveway and instantly I'm greeted by all my birds and it's basically my "reset button" from the day I have and everything just seems better. I don't care if it's 5 degrees outside, 2 feet of snow, or pouring down rain - I still will stay outside with them for hours after I feed them just to hang out with them. They all have such different personalities and get sooo attached to me as well as me getting attached to them (probably even more than they are to me). They literally become like family and I would do anything and everything for them. Seriously wouldn't trade them for the world, that's for sure!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love redoing furniture - basically restoring it and making it look brand new. I go to a lot of auctions and buy as much stuff as I can and just make it pretty again. Definitely keeps me busy, but it's a passion of mine!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband and I have been together for about 4 years - I work as a manager for a sprinkler company and my husband works for his family business at John Deere. We both were raised on farms growing up and we live on his families farm currently. When it comes to pets - shewwww we have a lot (which I LOVE - my husband not so much LOL). On top of all our poultry kids, we have one Starling bird I rescued back last year (Bird Bird) which is a handful, but man do I have a WHOLE lot of love for that tiny bird! Seriously if you ever find an orphaned starling baby on the ground take my advice and save it. They are sooooo worth it and will talk your ear off just like a parrot. It was so much work raising him, but I also wouldn't trade that guy for the world. We also have a bunny I saved as well (Bun Bun). Such a sweetie. Then there's our dogs which are our babies for sure. We have 2 pugs (Lulu is 2.5 years and Turbo is 10.5) Turbo has been my lifelong friend. He's an amazing dog, and a life saver. We also have a bloodhound (Tucker that's about 1.5 years old) that's a huge sweetheart and our "flock protector" we keep him in the back yard when were gone to keep an eye out for our birds.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
BYC is seriously been such a life saver with anything bird related. I literally can't thank you guys enough with your help in the most stressful situations! Every time I go to search anything (issues, ideas, etc) BYC is always showing up in my search, so obviously I felt a necessity to join so I can make friends with bird lovers just like myself. My friends look at me like I'm nuts, so having people to talk to on her that just "get it" helps tons to keep me sane! LOL
Thanks to whomever made it this far in my intro
