We have raised Rhode Island Reds from checks and have loved the beautiful, large brown eggs that are awesome. We started off with 6 chicks. One died the first week. Then as adults, we lost another to to a raccoon who chewed his way into the coop. We had to reinforce the chicken wire with heavy 16 ga. wire, which worked quite well.
The four hens left were laying really well until this past Spring. One hen stopped laying altogether and the other 3 hens laid every other day.
It has been a joy to go out to the coop each morning and say hello. They make noises and run over to greet us. We feed them cracked corn as a treat and organic food.
My husbnd cleans the hen house out once a week and puts pine shavings down. They free range during the day in a fenced area.
