The Questions:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

In some ways I'm new to chickens - I bought my first chicks 2 weeks ago. In other ways, I'm not. Both of my parents were raised on farms and I was fortunate enough to have visited the family farm several times over the years. My mother's family have always kept chickens, at times large flocks chickens that free-ranged in a pasture ( I have a picture of her feeding a flock of Rhode Island Whites that must have been at least 25 - 50 hens. Nowadays, my auntie keeps six leghorns in a large coop, mostly for her own eggs. I've been discussing the ins and outs of raising a flock with my farming family members for a couple of years now and have been reading books for about a year. I figured it was time to take the plunge.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Four chicks that are about two weeks old

(3) What breeds do you have?

Two Welsummers and two Rhode Island Reds. I am aching to own Buff Orphingtons and Plymouth Rocks (so pretty!) but am constrained by my local ordinances that limited me to no more than 4 chickens.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

I found out about BYC on my favorite website, Metafilter and it's sister site AskMetafilter. In many ways, their postings lit the flame for starting my own flock - I didn't realize that it was even possible to keep chickens in the city.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Knitting, sewing, scrapbooking & paper arts, photography home improvement/DIY projects, gardening - I'm your stereotypical aging urban hipster

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have been married to my awesome husband for 6 years but we have been together for 13 years. We have a ridiculously handsome and charming four year old son. I am currently a stay-at-home-mom but am looking at new career options when my son starts Kindergarten this fall. We have two cats and an aging dog.

That's my story ... nice to meet you all.

- Michelle
