I created this account to figure out what one of the new chicks was my sister got from the local Tractor Supply store.
This account will be shared between my sister and myself, but I'm willing to bet I'll be the one posting mostly.
My name is Sarah. I am 30 and a single mom of a 6-year-old boy. I live on the same few acres as my oldest sister, Katie. She is 36, married, and has two children, an 11-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Katie first got chickens last year. She went for the more docile breeds.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
There are now 7 adult hens, 4 "teenage" chickens (one of them is most likely male), and 4 two-week-old chicks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
3 Isa Browns, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 California Whites, 1 Ameraucana, 1 partidge Silkie, 2 buff Silkies, 1 black Silkie, and 4 assorted Bantams.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
While trying to research the specific type of Bantams my sister has I came across this site quite often.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
For myself I enjoy reading, writing, making clay mini polymer clay figures, and watching movies and TV shows. Am also fairly crafty.
My sister, Katie, enjoys watching Korean dramas and she says trying to clean her house is a hobby. She doesn't have a lot of time for hobbies. I suppose the chicken could be one. She really enjoys them.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
At the moment I am unemployed but working on getting back to school to become a teacher. My son is finishing up kindergarten and he's such a sweetheart ^.^ We currently do not have pets at our house as it belongs to my granddad and he worries the carpet will be ruined, but the 4 Bantams will most likely be going into my backyard.
Katie is a dental assisting teacher at the local community college, her husband is a mechanic. Her daughter is weirdly just like I was when I was her age, though more girly and outgoing, but she enjoys performing and is a social butterfly. Katie's son is in kindergarten also and he's more quiet, but certainly a character himself and is a mama's boy, but enjoys shooting targets with his dad.
Katie has two cats. One is a male, mostly black one named Merlin and the other is a female, probably part Maine Coon (as she has medium length, dense fur that is colored that brown, black, and gray). Her name is Sweetie Bell. She is under a year old and Merlin is 2. Both are mostly outside cats.
There two dogs on the property, too, that belong to my granddad and uncle who live on the property as well. One is a big black lab named Jack and the other is a mutt named Roscoe. Surprisingly the dogs do well with the chickens, but from time to time we have to scare Jack away as the 7 adult hens are allowed to run around the property.
Edit: Just editing to say I hope you'll excuse any typos and whatnot that appear. After four years if having this phone you would think I'd be able to type better one it, but no, that is most definitely not the case, lol. I try to read over things before I post but I still miss stuff.
