Hey all,

My roo who is about 7 months old has been crowing and doing the side step to my hens for the past 2-3months.
As far as i know, he hasnt mounted any of them yet, i know this through checking the eggs and also i havent seen him do it.

Is he a late bloomer?
Can i hold a hen so he can do it once and knows what to do in the future?

thanks

I would say wait. Are your hens submitting to him? (when they submit, they crouch to the ground and sort of spread their wings to the side) That may be why he isn't yet. Holding them down won't work, at least as far as I know, and even if it did - You shouldn't really hold them down, just approach them and touch their back, they should "submit" when you do. I would say wait, though.

No I wouldn't hold them down at all...I don't think that would work anyhow. You can always try to AI them. Sounds like they just need more time is all. Soon you will be saying "How do I get this rooster to stop mating my hens!?" lol

What breed is he and what breed are your hens? I have a almost 7 mth. old giant cochin roo that has been "getting it done" for over a month now at least and I continue to check my eggs and yes they are FERTILE! But I have two banty frizz roos(one that is 9 mths and one that is 7mths.) and they have tried a few times but no success and no consistancy with the "trying" part either. Although the do have the stump down!!!

My big hens won't submit at all to my banty roos and even my one little banty hen prefers to submit to my giant cochin boy????rather than the little one???

BUT in your case...I don't think holding the hen down is going to do anything and how pratel....we're you planning on calling the roo boy over and going to convince him to "Do the do" right then and there????

You do realize that you only have two hands!!!

I'll choose to take it as a weird compliment...never to be referred to outside of this forum!

He'll figure it out, don't worry. It sounds like he's on the right track already! Give him some time.
