Holy Smell!!!!

OK. So I have a roof over the run. I put Stall Dry down. Things are already smellin better. So now I'm thinking of putting sand in the run as mentioned so it will drain faster. Also I am useing modified 5 gal buckets for feeders. They work great however the girls for some reason like to dig it all out and eat off the ground. So i put some chicken wire on it so they can no longer do that. I thinks that was alot of the smell right there. And there dust bath holes also looked like little pools. I have gotten them all dried up now. So some sand tomorrow and all should be good. Thanks for all the ideas and quick responses. Crisis deverted.

Thanks
Roger

I have found that sand in the run works wonderfully. Keeps stuff dry. I also put down a layer of oyster shell lime after I rake everything out along with a layer of DE. Never have flies or odor. My run is 8x20 with 9 hens.

I have a thick layer of sand in all of my runs, along with a thick layer of mulch on top. Keeps things dry and keeps the smell down. And they love to scratch around in the mulch.
I've got sand throughout my chicken yard. We had a few loads of fill sand delivered, and spread it throughout. We also dug a few ditches so the water will drain. The ditches allow the water to drain, and the sand dries much faster than dirt. Smell is much better.

I don't know if you have any pine trees in your part of the woods, but one thing that helps my chicken run is to rake up and toss in a layer of pine needles. The acidic value of them tends to dry things up quick. A big plus is that the girls enjoy scratching through them.

I use hydrated lime but one thing I just did was smoke out the hen house with a smuge pot. I get a tin can and put smoldering hickory chips. I put the hens out , close the doors, windows and let it smoke for about 45 minutes (dirt floor) The fly and bugs go away and it smells far better.
