I'm new to BYC, though I've read a lot on forums. My silkie suddenly went broody a while back and ended up hatching 8 babies. They seemed healthy and fine up until I went on to a rodeo. I came here because I knew there were tons of you who knew a lot about this type of thing. I was gone for around 6 hours in total. I came back and picked up mama chicken and 7 were fine but one had died. So, I immediately took the deceased chick out and checked the others. Everyone was fine. They were plenty warm, had plenty of food and water and one suddenly died. A few moments ago I went to check on them and another had died. So I removed it. I began looking at the chick and it seemed that there was something in it's mouth. I don't know what, but there was something in it's mouth. Again, plenty of warmth, food and water and it passes away. I'd like to know if anyone else had any problems like this and if they know how to treat it and keep the other babies from dying. Like I said, these chicks were hatched at home.
