use any flexible plastic container with a lid (butter bowl, cottage cheese container, etc.)
cut a hole for their heads to fit through

poke little holes in the bottom in case water gets in

I also added a wire through the back to secure it from tipping over
 
How TIMELY. Just this afternoon I bought a 50# bag of granite grit for $6.50 at my feed store; a five lb. bag costs about $5 at TSC. I'll be making about six of those tomorrow morning. Great idea.

EDIT: While I'm at it, I'll make some also for the oyster shell that I bought this afternoon. Sure glad that Anne saves those containers.

I had been looking at feeders earlier and I was looking at this container, getting ready to throw it away and it just came to me "I bet I could make something out of that" and I needed something to put grit in so....

now to see how well it keeps water out since it's supposed to rain a lot
