Sorry but another ?. I have a home made bator from a cooler, water heater thermostate, etc. Now I put 2 holes on the long side and 1 on each end( about 1/2 inch round holes) will this be enough for air for the chicks to breath until they are dry and I move them to the brooder? I'm doing a test run now for the humidity (to get at 50%) this is going to be fun as we are suppose to get rain and the outside humidity will go up and will probably change it in the house to. I put very little water in the pan and its up to 64% humidity and only up to 95 degrees temp wise. Thanks for any help.

hi - i'm glad you asked that ? as i made an incubator and blocked all the holes up!!! i can take the polystyrene out the holes so i guess i can do that but then another set of eggs will still have 5 days hatching to go so i guess once the chicks are in the brooder i'll block the holes back up?! All new and exciting to me!!!

I'm wondering if these are enough holes and do I block them until the chicks start hatching? I hope to put some RIR eggs in tomorrow or the next day. Thanks.

Just watch your temps and humidity you will know if you need to plug them up or not. On my home made one I kept mine open and when my humidity needed to be at 70 % I blocked them. So just keep a eye on it and adjust as you go. But I have a computer fan in mine so that may make a little difference compared to yours.

Can the chicks breath if the holes are plugged? Thanks

You need some ventilatoin so having at least the holes cracked is a good idea. The chicks need air both before and after they hatch. You don't want to suffocate the eggs as they need to breathe too.

I have a hole behind my fan so it pulls air in I forgot to mention in my first post. Plus as I add water the lid gets opened and several times a day when the eggs are turned so the air is replaced that way also.
