Home made turner- how much is enough rock

previously we worked on the old school method of turning, complete turns by hand.
Now I've been looking at autoturners with the mind of building my own, seeing what most people are making they work on a rocking system, so how much rock is enough? and can you go to far over?

Seriously now...I'd say 90 degrees is enough.
