We bought 13 chicks in April.( they are now in a coop and laying eggs) we started them off in a large black tub from TC. We soon realized as they grew that it wasnt big enough. Our carpenter friend built me one out of 2 x4's and plywood. It is 6'long x 3' wide x 36" high. Seems a little excessive, but 13 chicks grow quickly.
A fold down door halfway down the front for easy access to clean and visit my girls. Open top with chicken wire across for ventilation and heat lamp. Pine shavings inside, of course food n water.
Pine shavings worked well. Small roosts added later made of 2 x 4's. Of course a few decide that the waterer makes a great roost.
