I don't know if I am the only person or if there are just that few of us, but I am finding the recipes for homemade feeds really frustrating. I live in small town Nebraska, I don't have access to all of the odd ball things that they recommend you add to your feed for a "balanced" diet, like sea kelp just for example. I do, however, have access to grains like corn, milo (aka sorghum), oats, and hard red wheat. Also, as I was born and raised on a farm/ranch, I have access to things like alfalfa hay, which I know the stems will probably not have much appeal, but I have seen clover in the list of greens.

I am planning to feed kitchen scraps like carrot peelings, potatoes, stale bread, dried/crushed egg shells, possibly scrambled/hard boiled eggs (if I have an excess) and using cabbage and apples as treats/toys, as well as, allowing them to free range once they are big enough and I have them coop trained so they will have access to bugs and all sorts of other nutrients and grit.

I guess what I want to know is if there is a way to use what I have readily available to me to feed them at home without having to order the other items online or go to a specialty market hours away to get the other odd ball feedstuffs.

As a side note I work in a feedmill, and the items I am referring to ARE NOT available around here.

Sometimes people make things over-complicated. The grains you mentioned sound fine, and since they're getting scraps + free-ranging that should cover anything not found in them anyway.

People raised chickens thousands of years without sea kelp LOL. Don't worry about it.
