Hi,

I just got my first chicks and your forum has been invaluable for research. They are 2 weeks old now.
and they are in my home made brooder but I'm not really sure why because it's cooler in the brooder
than outside in the sun!

This all started because I have had a terrible tick season this year, and we currently have 3 dogs. All of
the spot on products appear to be useless, and none of the medications for fleas take care of ticks... So
while at the vet's office she suggested that I get chickens so that they will eat all the ticks. At first I
laughed but then I thought how much fun it would be to really actually have chickens.... so we went ahead
and started.

I am just at the stage of planning the first chicken coop, but I am thinking it needs to be simply a
fortified large cage with an area at the back where the chickens can get shade from the sun. I am a
backdoor Lychee grower so I have lots of lychee trees on my property and I can put the coop between the
rows of trees so it will be nice and cool, but I am not really sure how chickens and lychee trees will mix. I
am hoping that I can train them to go back to the coop and not roost in the trees!!!!

well thanks for listening, any ideas are welcome, I have tons of enthusiasm but way short on experience.
