I have a single orpington hen. She was the only one that hatched and the others are a different breed. She layed well with eggs for about the first year but has since hardly layed at all. Ive wondered if this might be because she isnt happy in the group as she has a very different personality (much calmer and quieter). She isnt bullied by any means and isnt the lowest on the pecking order. Shell spend time in the nesting boxes daily but it produces nothing. I wonder if the time has come to cull her, although she theoretically has a lot of eggs left in her. Just she is so sweet that it really is a tough decision.

Is it possible that she might start laying again?

What's her diet?
She’s partially on layer feed and a feed with more protein and less calcium. She has access to oyster shells. Other than that the occasional grass (when we let them out on the part of the run that isn’t all dug up) or the occasional food scrap.

When did she last lay an egg?How does her lower abdomen look, is it swollen? If so, hard or squishy like water filled?

She laid a single egg recently so I know she's able. Nothing appears to be physically wrong with her that is apparent on the outside.

Does she fluff up when sitting un the nesting box? She might be getting broody.
She's always been weird about her eggs compared to the others, like she'll protect even the fake eggs and lay for hours when she's in the box. But she's never actually been broody and she's never spent more than a few hours sitting on the eggs. She isn't the brightest of our girls, she can spend 4 hours in the nestbox and then lay on the floor below it. But it's been a year since she did that.
